, Jakarta - The Association for Elections and Democracy or Perludem has asked the election organizers, the government and the House of Representatives to seriously consider the option to postpone the 2020 Pilkada due to the spread of the Covid-19 case.

Perludem researcher, Fadli Ramadhanil, said that the implementation of the pilkada includes many activities that are prone to becoming a new point for the spread of Corona.

"We urge the KPU, the government and the DPR to consider options to postpone the stages of implementing the elections, given the spread of Covid-19 is increasingly widespread and could threaten anyone," said Fadli in a written statement, Friday, September 18, 2020.

Fadli said the danger signs of the Covid-19 pandemic in the 2020 Pilkada had been seen during the registration stage for candidate pairs on September 4-6. The General Election Commission noted that 60 potential candidates were infected with Covid-19.

Fadli said that the organizers could not escape the virus infection. Most recently, the Chairman of the KPU, Arief Budiman, tested positive for Covid-19. Previously, the KPU commissioner, Evi Novida Ginting Manik, was also confirmed positive.

Perludem also asked the KPU, DPR, and the government to immediately coordinate with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), especially the Covid-19 Handling Task Force.

Fadli said there needed to be coordination, especially regarding the risk of transmission and updating of the handling of Covid-19 in 270 regions holding the 2020 Pilkada.

Second, Perludem urged the KPU, DPR and the government to make measurable indicators, based on data and information from the Covid-19 Handling Task Force.

"Which of the 270 regions are ready and safe to carry out regional elections, to ensure that the implementation of the elections does not become a point of the wider spread of Covid-19.

Next, Perludem urged the KPU, the government and the DPR to guarantee, prioritize, and ensure the safety of the lives of every citizen. Fadli said carrying out the 2020 Pilkada stages had seriously threatened the lives of many people.

So, Perludem assesses that the postponement of the 2020 Pilkada needs to be done until there are measurable and accurate indicators that the transmission of Covid-19 can be controlled.

Fadli said that it is legally possible to postpone the implementation of the 2020 Pilkada in some regions or even all electoral districts. He said what he was waiting for was the policy choices from the KPU, the government and the DPR.

"Postponing the 2020 regional elections does not mean we fail to be democratic, but rather shows a responsive attitude in reading the situation and promoting public health," said Jokowi.
