Safe Tips for Eating Frozen Food during a Pandemic, Pay Attention to Storage Methods
, Jakarta - Frozen food or frozen food ready to eat has become the choice of many people during the Covid-19 pandemic. In order to maintain the nutrition of these foods, there are safe ways to consume them.
Pelni Hospital's nutrition specialist, Jovita Amelia, said ready-to-eat frozen food would be safe to eat if users read carefully the recommendations listed on the packaging, such as storage temperature and expiration date.
"So there is a standard storage temperature and the storage time for the freezer is less than five degrees, the storage time is two to three months," said dr. Jovita when contacted by Antara, Wednesday, September 16, 2020.
Ready-to-eat frozen foods are basically foods that have been cooked or undercooked. To enjoy it, one has to re-cook it by frying, boiling, steaming, grilling or simply reheating which means there is repeated cooking.
Therefore, it is important not to spare food so that you no longer need to store it in the refrigerator or freezer . Besides being able to remove nutrients due to heating several times, food that has been opened from the packaging is very easy to generate bacteria.
"Do not put the defrosted food back into the freezer , because the defrosted food will easily grow bacteria," said dr. Jovita.
Jovita also said you should choose ready-to-eat frozen food that does not contain nitrates. Because for the long term, consuming foods with these ingredients can be harmful to health.
"Food preservatives, especially those containing nitrates, are not good for long-term consumption, especially with heating because they have carcinogenic effects," said Jovita.
